Ο Peter Kowald μεγάλωσε στο Wuppertal. 'Εμαθε κοντραμπάσσο στα δεκάξη του. Και από το 1962 έπαιζε με τον τενορσαξοφωνίστα Peter Broetzmann. Το 1967 συμμετέσχε στον δίσκο "For Adolphe Sax" του Broetzmann, το 1968 στο LP "Machine Gun" - δύο σημαντικά ντοκουμέντα της Γερμανικής ελεύθερης τζαζ. Από το 1966 συνεργάστηκε επίσης με τον πιανίστα Alexander von Schlippenbach στην Ορχήστρα Globe Unity καθώς και με μικρότερα ανσάμπλ αλλά και με τον τρομπετίστα Manfred Schoof (LP "European Echoes", 1969). Από της αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1970 ο Kowald διηύθυνε δικές του μπάντες και έπαιξε με τους πιο σημαντικούς Ευρωπαίους και Αμερικανούς μουσικούς της avant-garde jazz. Το 1969 ήταν μεταξύ τον ιδρυτών το FMP (FREE MUSIC PRODUCTION), μια φίρμα δίσκων που ανήκε σε μουσικούς στο Βερολίνο.
Από της αρχές του '80 ο Kowald παίζει όλο και περισσότερο ως σολίστας κοντραμπάσσο, η σε ντουέτα και τρίο με άλλους από το κόσμο της τζαζ καθώς και από άλλες κουλτούρες, με μουσικούς, χορευτές, ποιητές και ζωγράφους. Δύο επισκέψεις στην Ιαπωνία (το 1982 με τον τραγουδιστή Lauren Newton και το 1983 με τον τσελίστα Tristan Honsiger) τον έφεραν σε επαφή με ξένες παραδόσεις σε αυτοσχεδιασμό. Το 1984 οργάνωσε το Φεστιβάλ iSound Unity στην Νέα Υόρκη. Από το 1986 δούλεψε όλο και περισσότερο με μεγαλύτερα ανσάμπλ, ονομαζόμενα συνήθως "Global Village" με αναφορά σ' ένα άλμπουμ που ηχογράφησε το 1986 στο Τόκιο με τον σαξοφωνίστα Danny Davis και τον Γιαπωνέζο βιολονίστα και σκηνογράφο Takehisa Kosugi.
Το 1994 ο Kowald παρέμεινε για ένα ολόκρηρο χρόνο στο Wuppertal, παίζοντας μόνο με μουσικούς, χορευτές, ποιητές και ζωγράφους που τον επισκέπτονταν στο Wuppertal. Εξ ίσου φιλόδοξη ήταν η περιοδεία που έκανε την άνοιξη του 2001 στης ΗΠΑ, όπου σε κάθε πόλη γνώρισε πολλούς διαφορετικούς μουσικούς. Peter Kowald grew up in Wuppertal. He learned double bass at age 16, and since 1962 played together with tenor saxophonist Peter Broetzmann. In 1967 he participated in Broetzmann's record "For Adolphe Sax", 1968 in the LP "Machine Gun", two important documents of German free jazz. Since 1966 he also worked with pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach in the Globe Unity Orchestra as well as in smaller ensembles, and with trumpeter Manfred Schoof (LP "European Echoes", 1969). Since the early 1970s Kowald led bands under his own name, also played with the most important musicians of European and American avant-garde jazz. In 1969 he belonged to the founding fathers of FMP (Free Music Production), a musicians-owned record label in Berlin.
Since the early 1980s Kowald performs more and more as double bass soloist, or in duos and trios with partners from the world of jazz as well as from other cultures, with musicians, dancers, poets and painters. Two visits to Japan (1982 with singer Lauren Newton, 1983 with cellist Tristan Honsinger) brought him into contact with foreign traditions of improvisation. In 1984 he organized the iSound Unity Festival in New York City. Since 1986 he worked more and more with larger ensembles, usually called "Global Village" in reference to amn album he recorded in October 1986 in Tokyo with saxophonist Danny Davis and the Japanese violinist and installation artist Takehisa Kosugi.
In 1994 Kowald stayed at home in Wuppertal for a full year, only playing with musicians, dancers, poets and painters who visited him in Wuppertal. A similarly ambitious project was his spring 2001 tour through the United States where he met many very different musicians in every city. In 1996 Peter Kowald was awarded the Albert-Mangelsdorff- Award. Wolfram Knauer
